Maharana Pratap Horticultural University was established on 28th Nov. 2016 by the Haryana Act No. 32 of 2016. The above Act of the Legislature of the State of Haryana received the ascent of the Governor of Haryana on 22nd November, 2016 and published for general information as per Notification No. Leg.36/2016 dated 28.11.2016 issued by the Law and Legislative Department, Haryana. The university has set up its camp office at CCSHAU, Hisar on 21st January 2017. The State Govt. transferred land measuring 118 acres for development of the University at village Anjanthali, Karnal. The infrastructure as well as farm area of the university at village Anjanthali has been developed for carrying out teaching, research and extension activities. The Govt. has transferred 65 acres land of CCSHAU to MHU, Karnal for construction of buildings at New Campus of the University to become world class in all relevant parameters.

The Advisory Group constituted by the State Govt. in its meeting held on 30.03.2017 recommended for creation of 35 departments/offices along with 932 posts (teaching and Non-teaching posts) for establishment of MHU. After considering the above proposal of the Advisory Group, the Govt. constituted the committee under the Chairmanship of Special Secretary Agriculture, Haryana to consider and make recommendations in regard to above proposal. The Committee in its meeting held on 04.12.2017 recommended for creation of 756 posts (09 Officers of the University, 270 teaching posts and 477 non-teaching posts) and 21 departments/offices (including College of Horticulture with its 10 departments) to be released in phased manner in five years.

The Govt. has sanctioned 112 posts (09 posts of officers of the University, 36 teaching posts and 67 non-teaching posts) in first phase for development of this newly established university for carrying out mandated activities as per its Act. Out of these 112 posts, various posts of officers of the university as well as teaching and non-teaching posts have been filled up and functioning of the university is going on smoothly. As there is emergent requirement of manpower to scale up mandated activities of the university for larger welfare of farming community/stake holders, the proposal has been sent to the Govt. for sanction/creation of 231 essentially required teaching and non-teaching posts in 2nd phase. It is expected that approval of the Govt. will be received shortly. The university will go ahead for filling up the posts as per prescribed procedure of recruitment.

As per guideline of the ICAR, the MHU has established College of Horticulture with three departments for awarding degree in PG Programmes in the discipline of Fruit Science, Vegetable Science and Floriculture & Landscape Architecture. The University is committed to open two new departments for awarding degree in the discipline of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops and Post-harvest Management as early as possible so as to maintained uniformity with horticultural universities across the country.
